Cultural Program 2022

THE FIVE SENSES IN LITURGY.

SEEING THE WORD

Cultural program\ third edition

“The Church has always venerated the divine Scriptures just as she venerates the body of the Lord, since, especially in the sacred liturgy, she unceasingly receives and offers to the faithful the bread of life from the table both of God's word and of Christ's body.” [Dei Verbum n.21]

The word is sound, but it is also place because the sound can only arise in a specific space and time. In the Catholic Church ritual, the Word of God is announced so that Christian people can be nourished with the words of the faith as if at a table, comparing the Eucharistic Table with the table of the Word of God.

The proclamation of the Word of God and, in particular the Resurrection of Christ is the center of the Christian liturgical life and finds its maximum expression in the Easter vigil. In this moment the liturgy enhances all the human senses.  Singing, incense, exchanging the sign of peace and, of course, Eucharistic invite the faithful to feel the Mystery also in a sensory way, foretasting the divine beauty, the faithful can already experience it but not yet completely.

The space is the environment in which gestures, sounds, scents of the liturgy arise and is the place where the announcement of the Resurrection of Christ resounds; with its structure and images, the space can show the expression of the Christian Mystery in an effective way, making the faithful perceive the transcendence of Christ with all their senses.

“The force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church” (DV 21). The word of God can therefore be stronger if spread in a good quality space and the message of salvation can be more effective when announced in a good place; therefore, architecture and art contribute to the spread and perception of the Word.

Images are not just simple tools; it is necessary to emphasize the importance of artistic artworks in the proclamation of the Word of God and in the concrete perception of the Christian Mystery.

Aiming to research the meanings and the correct ways of expression in liturgy, during the 3rd EDITION OF DEVOTIO we will analyze the topic SEEING THE WORD.

The topic was chosen with the aim to give value to the role of deacons in the Church and their commitment to announce the Resurrection during the Easter vigil.
