CONFERENCE - Functional restoration of historic bells in the management of sacred buildings: constraint or opportunity?

In Italy there are over 60,000 churches, many of which has historic bells. A relevant number of bells crack or break every year. These are often bells that are over 70 years old and therefore are under the regulations for the protection of cultural heritage (Legislative Decree 42/2004).
The sound of bells is now recognized as intangible heritage, and has a value that deserves to be preserved.
Repairing a damaged bell means complex choices for parishes and dioceses: should they opt for conservative restoration or recasting?
The workshop will explore these questions, presenting evaluation criteria, restoration techniques, authorization procedures, and restrictions imposed by the Superintendence. It aims to provide useful tools for those involved in the management of bell heritage - not only in sacred buildings, but also in broader cultural contexts.
