WORKSHOP - Italian Ecclesiastical Law
curated by FACI – Federazione tra le Associazioni del Clero in Italia

Ecclesiastical law is a branch of public law that governs the rules regulating the relationship between the State and the Church. In Italy, this includes, first and foremost, the 1984 Concordat and the subsequent laws implementing it, the rules governing the activities of ecclesiastical bodies in civil society, as well as the financial relations between the Italian State and the Catholic Church.
This area of law ancompasses a wide range of legal materials which, alongside the national legislation, include many documents issued by the Italian Episcopal Conference to align Church practices with civil law. These reflect changes in society not both nationally and internationally - for example, in areas such as privacy legislation.
The need for a practical and comprehensive resource covering both canonical and civil law governing Church–State relations in Italy led to the decision to update the well-known F.A.C.I. Compendium from 1989 and 1992, which was reissued in May 2025.
