EXPERIENCES OF ENERGY COMMUNITIES IN ITALIAN DIOCESES
Round table discussion

TUESDAY, 13th FEBRUARY 2024

10.00 a.m.

The energy crisis is another signal that drives us to be a community able to revise our lifestyles. That implies living through the crisis for a renewed conversion of living the Gospel. This ecological game is played by involving territories, networks, relationships, and people. Energy communities and integral ecology are concepts to be introduced into daily practice even in the vocabulary of our dioceses and parishes.

Energy communities (CERs) represent a great opportunity to nourish relationships and participation, but also to fight energy poverty. That follows what has been said at the Laudato Sì where «the local instance can make a difference. It is here that greater responsibility, a strong sense of community, a special caring ability and more generous creativity, and a deep love for one's land can be born».

In a round table discussion, there will be an exhibition of case studies and experiences gained regarding CERs in some Italian dioceses, so as to grasp the potentials and fragilities that have stimulated ecclesial structures to work alongside third-party entities, public administrations, private foundations, and associations. By doing so, it was realized a project that would connect the secular world with parishes and generate social, economic and environmental value. CERs are still a way for ecclesiastical bodies to experiment that the Integral Ecology proposed by the Church can be translated into a new model of sustainable, human and economic development. This is about an inclusive project tool that could provide real support to families, associations, local authorities, and businesses by helping to reduce their energy costs with the typical subsidiarity approach.
