Pietro Arizzi's interview, Design & Project Manager.
Can you briefly introduce us your company and your production?
The Ukubu brand was founded on the slopes of Mount Etna in 2011, focusing on 3D laser engraving of photos, images, works of art, logos, and graphic designs, which can be enhanced with text and applied to a wide variety of crystal forms. One of these forms, the cube, was adopted as the company’s “speaking name,” following the inflection of the Sicilian language, for the brand itself. Since 2013, the company has expanded its offering, presenting a wide range of products in the museum and tourism sectors and, above all, in the religious field: banners and drapes; textile decorations for places of worship, streets, and historic buildings; icons; statuary; crosses, medals, rosaries, bracelets, and ceramics. The deep bond—with its resulting enhancement of local traditions and professional expertise—that the company maintains with the territory in which it is based has, over the years, been combined with the projection of its activities into a national and international context, both through its e-commerce platform and through direct relationships maintained by its agents with important Italian and foreign organizations operating in the sacred, museum, and corporate sectors. The expansion of its offering and commercial objectives has led the company to structure its proposal into different product lines, among which “Luce Sakra” is the one specifically dedicated to the sacred world. The deep-rooted layer of popular piety that profoundly permeates the land of Sicily has, in recent years, led Ukubu to refine its creative sensitivity toward these expressions of faith defined by St. John Paul II as a «true treasure of the People of God»: it is on these foundations—combined with careful consultancy, study, and design work—that our corporate mission is built.
How do you assess the current situation and future prospects of the Italian market for religious articles?
Through our commercial network, we have developed particularly extensive experience in those sectors of the religious market linked to popular piety and devotion. We can therefore state that it is a niche yet demanding market, growing in its rediscovery of past arts and styles, while remaining attentive to the innovations of the present.
The fifth edition of Devotio is approaching. What do you expect from this fair?
If our primary expectation is undoubtedly the further development of the company, this goal has for us a value that is not only economic but also deeply ontological. We firmly believe that dialogue with other companies operating in the sector, as well as with visitors themselves, can foster human and professional growth. Devotio represents for us a fundamental opportunity for meeting and exchange with parish priests and industry professionals.
Will you be presenting anything new at “Devotio 2026”? What might that be?
Within the context of Devotio, a significant innovation is certainly represented by our textile projects as well as by our 3D-engraved crystals. In the latter case, images, logos, symbols, and textual elements take shape as true sculptures created—through the subtraction of material—within a wide variety of glass forms. The laser beam of the production machinery engraves, or rather, speaking in Michelangelo’s terms, frees the form, structured by a 3D graphic design software, by burning and thus removing the excess material. This product, appropriately complemented by a support made of a different material and brought to the fullest expression of its value by an integrated light source, stands out as an emblematic archetype of contemporary style and design—an innovative and functional product also suitable for the context of sacred architecture, in addition to the field of religious objects. At the same time, it presents itself as the manifestation of a distinctly artisanal craft, which balances the uniqueness of the raw material and the distinctive production technique with a plurality of creative combinations, making each individual piece produced an authentic work of art.
